Writing a novel, in 2010, can provide an excellent source of recurring income. Book writing in today's publishing industry has never been easier. Knowing the tricks of the industry allows to you write several novels a year. No, I'm not kidding. Many, many authors are doing that very thing.
A major misconception is that you must be someone in order to earn a living as a writer. You've got to have a name like Harold Robbins, Danielle Steele, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Grisham or Nora Roberts. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Think about this: John Grisham has sold about 100 million books, Nora Roberts about 145 million, Dean Koontz about 200 Million, Stephen King about 300 million. Yes, those are impressive numbers. Now, think about this: John Grisham has written 22 books, Nora Roberts has written 145, Dean Koontz 60, and Stephen King 70.
Have you heard of Barbara Cartland? She's sold between 500 million and 1 billion copies of her 723 books. Then there's Enid Blyton who's sold 300 - 600 million of his 800 books. Corin Tellado has sold about 400 million of his 4,000 titles. How can they write 723 or 800 or 4,000 different books? They know a secret.
Think of one book as one income stream. Think of two books as two income streams and on and on. Now let's say that one book generates $200 a month in royalties for you. Another book might generate $500 monthly and another only $10. Those famous and not-so-famous authors mentioned above did not put all their eggs in one basket. They wrote book after book after book. And you can do it, too.
I wish I'd learned this twenty or thirty years ago. I currently have one book published and available at major bookstores, and I'm writing another now. The non-fiction book that's currently on the market generates a few hundred dollars monthly. If the second does as well or better, I'll be quite happy - because I already have book three waiting in the wings.
Something You Need to Know
Harlequin, a name you know, commissioned a poll in face of the current economic conditions. 75% of adults questioned said they would cut back on dining out, going to movies and, even, vacations before they cut back on book purchases. Go ahead and rad that sentence again. Michelle Renaud, a senior manager at Harlequin Enterprises Limited, said, "The recession highlighted the downside of greed, indulgence and giving in to temptation, but we noticed a shift back to life's simplest pleasures."
There is a second part to what you need to know. The book publishing industry has and continues to undergo big changes. Self-publishing, once reserved for vanity type books, is now mainstream. In fact, did you know that John Grisham self-published his first book? (more below)
